Why TikTok’s Smart+ Is Not Just for Advertisers.
TikTok built automation to decide which video works. What it optimises for is a statement about the feed, and an organic team can read it without spending.
Smart+ is TikTok’s advertising automation.
It pools an advertiser’s creative, decides what to run and shifts delivery towards whatever performs. NBK does not sell, run or manage paid social, so the campaign builder itself is not the interesting part.
The interesting part is what TikTok had to publish in order to build it.
To automate creative selection, the platform had to state what it thinks makes a video work. It has done that in far more detail than it has ever done for the organic feed. An ad system is a ranking machine for creative, and TikTok has documented what its ranking machine looks for. That document is readable by a team that never spends a penny on distribution.
What TikTok announced, and when
Smart+ is not new. TikTok launched it on 7 October 2024 at Advertising Week, describing it as automating the performance advertising process across targeting, bidding and creative.
May was the creative half. At TikTok World ’26 on 13 May 2026, TikTok added Auto Selection, which it describes as centralising all ad creative, creator content, product assets and Symphony-powered creative, then “automatically selects what will perform best”. TikTok’s own summary calls Smart+ “our AI-automated performance solution” and says it “delivers what works”.
Two related changes landed in the same set. Automation modules can now be switched on or off one at a time, across targeting, budget, catalogue ads and placements. And TikTok opened an Ads Model Context Protocol server, so developers can build agents directly on top of the ad system.
Smart+ began extending to search campaigns in the product preview TikTok published on 28 July 2026.
What is actually available, and to whom
Announced is not shipped, and this is narrower than the headline.
TikTok’s own help documentation puts auto-selected creatives inside Smart+ campaigns only, for app promotion objectives and select lead generation advertisers. The stated audience is app and gaming advertisers plus selected lead generation customers. The region is listed as global, which means the gate is account type, not country.
The broader Smart+ upgraded experience carries a plainer note in TikTok’s help centre: the feature may not be available to you yet, and TikTok tells you to ask your account manager.
A platform saying “selected accounts” is a platform saying most accounts do not have this.
Why an organic team should read an ads product
Your organic video and somebody else’s ad sit in the same feed, competing for the same seconds from the same person.
TikTok has never published how its recommendation system ranks organic video. It publishes, at length, what it tells advertisers a strong video looks like, and now what its automation selects on. That is the closest thing to a written statement of the platform’s taste, and it should shape a short form video strategy whether or not there is an ad account anywhere in the building.
One caveat, stated plainly. Ad ranking and feed ranking are not the same system, and TikTok has not claimed they are. Both are trained on the same behaviour, whether a person stops, stays and watches. Treat the guidance as a strong signal about the feed, not a specification of it.
The creative rules TikTok publishes for free
Read without the campaign wrapper, TikTok’s creative documentation for performance ads is a short form video craft guide. None of it requires spending anything.
- Introduce the content proposition in the first three seconds.
- Prioritise the hook in the first six seconds, which TikTok ties directly to engagement and watch time.
- Shoot vertical at 9:16, at 720p or better.
- Build sound and music into the story rather than laying them over the top.
- Keep on-screen text to five to ten words per second.
- Aim for a style TikTok calls “not overly polished”, so the video sits naturally beside everything else in the feed.
TikTok’s marketing pages add that 90% of ad recall impact is captured inside the first six seconds, and that 88% of users say sound is vital to the TikTok experience. Those are TikTok’s figures about TikTok’s product, so take the direction as credible and the precision as sales material. The instruction underneath them holds either way.
Variation is the discipline worth taking
TikTok’s guidance suggests three to five different creatives per ad group, and three to five varied ad groups per campaign. Auto Selection then ranks that pool on historical and predicted performance, and refreshes delivery while the campaign is still running.
Take the money out and the mechanism is unremarkable. The system is not clever about one video. It is clever about having several, and decisive about which one keeps going.
That discipline transfers cleanly. One idea, three openings, published across a fortnight, with only the opening changed.
This is the part of platform optimisation that gets skipped, because producing one video feels like the job and producing three variants of it feels like waste. It is not waste. It is the only way the feed can tell you anything.
The sample size an organic account cannot buy
Now the limit, because pretending it does not exist would be dishonest.
An ad system reaches a verdict quickly because it can put a variation in front of a large audience on demand. An organic account cannot do that, and no amount of effort closes the gap.
So organic testing is slower and messier. The variables tangle: posting time, subject, what else was in the feed that week, how many people followed you since the last one. Three posts settle nothing. Thirty, across a quarter, start to.
That trade is worth taking. The organic read is the more honest one, because nothing is subsidising the distribution. When an organic video holds attention, it held it on merit, and the lesson does not expire with a budget.
What to record, or the test teaches you nothing
Varying the opening is the easy half. The hard half is being able to say afterwards what you learned, and a test nobody wrote down is just content.
Four fields, kept somewhere a person will actually open.
- What changed. One line naming the single variable, not a description of the whole video.
- When it went out. Date and time, because a Tuesday morning and a Sunday night are not the same feed.
- What happened. Retention or completion, not likes.
- What you concluded. One sentence, written that week, before hindsight tidies it up.
That is the whole apparatus. It is also where analytics stops being reporting and starts being operations, because a number only matters if it changes what gets made next.
What good looks like
A team that has absorbed this does not look busier. It looks more deliberate.
One variable changes per test. Openings get written in batches of three before anything is filmed, so the variants are real alternatives rather than an edit made under pressure. The review happens on a fixed day, not when somebody remembers. The list of hooks that worked is a living document, and so is the list of the ones that did not.
And when TikTok publishes new guidance, somebody reads the primary page rather than a summary of it, because summaries drop the caveats first.
How NBK thinks about platform automation
Every automation a platform ships is a description of what that platform rewards. Read that way, an ad product is documentation, and documentation is free.
NBK’s team has shipped more than 46,000 posts. What separates a team that improves from one that repeats itself is rarely talent. It is whether anyone can say what last quarter taught them.
So the guidance becomes a creative standard the team writes against, the variation becomes a publishing rhythm rather than an occasional experiment, and the results go somewhere they can still be read in three months. That is the operations answer to a creative question.
Next step
If your team posts consistently and still cannot say which openings work, the constraint is not creative talent, it is the absence of a record. NBK can help find the constraint in the system and build the rhythm that closes it.
