Meta VR Glasses launch in spring 2027 for just under $1,300.

Meta’s 100-gram VR Glasses go on sale in the US next spring. Calls work through WhatsApp and YouTube is a launch partner; there is no UK date yet.

Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses at Connect on 23 September: a virtual reality headset built as a pair of glasses, weighing about 100 grams, which Meta says is five times lighter than Meta Quest 3.

They go on sale in spring 2027 for just under $1,300 in the US. Meta has not given a UK price or date.

The parts that touch social are calling and watching. Hologram calling shows a photorealistic version of the wearer, with their expressions in real time, to everyone on the call, including people joining from a phone or a computer, and Meta says it works with any calling app, naming WhatsApp and Zoom. YouTube is on the list of media partners, with Prime Video, Disney+, ESPN and others. Meta’s post does not say the glasses record video, and it names none of Instagram, Facebook or Threads.

The hardware

The glasses hold the display and sensors; a puck on an optical tether holds the processor, battery and storage and clips to a pocket or bag. Meta quotes a 5K micro-OLED display at 37 pixels per degree, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos sound in the frames, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, and up to three hours of continuous video playback on a charge, with 45W fast charging. There are no controllers: the wearer talks to the Meta AI agent built into the operating system, or uses their eyes and hand gestures. Open sides and a passthrough camera keep the room in view.

What it plays

Meta calls it the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device. Once it launches, Meta promises more than 100 immersive live US sports events a year with partners including ESPN, MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC, more than 75 games at launch played with hand gestures, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are offering their 3D catalogues for the first time. It also works as a private multi-screen workspace that turns any flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad.

What it means for brands

Meta built these glasses for watching and calling, not for posting. The only social app Meta names on them is WhatsApp, for calls, and the only creator platform on its launch list is YouTube. So on what Meta has said so far, brand content would reach these glasses through YouTube and live sport, watched on a large private screen, not through a feed.

This week there is nothing to change, because nothing ships before spring 2027 and the UK has no date. Add one line to next year’s plan instead: check at launch whether Instagram or Facebook video has joined YouTube in the glasses, because that decides whether this is a new screen for your social video or only for your YouTube channel.
